Normalizing Secularism in the 21st Century
The term Secularism has been muddied over the last number of decades by both the religious and non-religious alike. Secularism is categorically not saying that the religious may not speak out publicly or have a say in public life. It is about saying that religion alone should not confer a privileged say in public life or greater influence on it. It really is as simple as that.
I am very passionate about humanism and secularism and I think it's absolutely exciting that there are progressive religious and non-religious communities in Alberta and Canada that strongly believe that there should be a clear separation of religion and state. However, we all know we have a long way to go before that is truly experienced in this province and nation as a whole.
The goal of our organization is to organize itself out of existence. We want to normalize secularism to a point where it’s so common that secularists no longer need a group to campaign against religious privilege in the face of religious lawmakers.
But were not there yet.
